Belarus-Uganda cooperation discussed

MOSCOW, 17 May (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Aleinik held negotiations with his Ugandan counterpart Jeje Abubakhar Odongo in Moscow on 17 May, BelTA has learned.
After the meeting Sergei Aleinik told reporters: “We’ve discussed a rather broad range of matters and prospects of bilateral cooperation. Topics of the greatest interest for Africa were touched upon. Those are the development of agriculture, the enhancement of effectiveness of agricultural technologies, the development of infrastructure, medical industry, and information technologies. We have something to offer in all areas without exception and we intend to advance cooperation in all these areas.”
The sides also touched upon matters of improvement of the legal base of Belarus-Uganda relations. “We have five agreements on the agenda: in agriculture, education, on cooperation between the chambers of commerce and industry and between the ministries of foreign affairs,” the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs explained. “We have agreed to finish work on these documents soon and sign them during forthcoming (I hope this year) bilateral visits either at the level of the ministries of foreign affairs or representatives of our states.”
Sergei Aleinik also mentioned he had invited the Ugandan delegation to visit the forthcoming agricultural expo Belagro, which is due in early June. “The minister confirmed that the Ugandan delegation will come to Minsk in order to discuss these matters in detail,” he clarified.
The Belarusian minister of foreign affairs stated: “There is no doubt that Africa is now going through a renaissance and we clearly feel the demand of countries in this region for our machines, equipment, vehicles, our technologies and competences. And naturally we intend to actively advance this vector of our cooperation because today Africa is an obvious belt and a pillar of the multipolar world. This is why economic and political cooperation is of invaluable interest for our countries.”
Sergei Aleinik also said he was grateful to his Ugandan counterpart for the opportunity to have this meeting essentially on the go: “He has just landed in Moscow where he will hold bilateral events.”
Negotiations with the Ugandan minister of foreign affairs were the last item on the itinerary of the Belarusian foreign minister’s visit to Moscow, which took place on 15-17 May. Sergei Aleinik met with heads of both chambers of the Russian parliament, had negotiations with the Russian minister of foreign affairs on items on the bilateral agenda and the multilateral one. A joint statement on common foreign policy priorities of Belarus and Russia was signed as a result of the talks.
