Belarus to set up 1,394 district, territorial commissions for parliamentary elections

MINSK, 24 November (BelTA) – A total of 1,394 district and territorial election commissions will be set up for the elections, Belarusian CEC Chairman Igor Karpenko said during a meeting with political parties and other public associations, BelTA has learned.
"In accordance with the constitutional amendments adopted at the national referendum on 27 February 2022, the political system is undergoing a large-scale modernization. The final stage of this work will be the election of the deputy corps on the single voting day, the election of delegates to the Belarusian People's Congress and the next presidential election which should be held no later than 20 July 2025," Igor Karpenko said. “On 20 November, the president of the Republic of Belarus signed Decree No. 367 which set the date for the elections of deputies of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus of the eighth convocation and local Councils of Deputies of the twenty-ninth convocation for 25 February 2024.
110 deputies of the House of Representatives and 12,514 deputies of local Councils of Deputies will be elected on the single voting day. "1,394 district and territorial election commissions, about 5,500 precinct commissions will be set up for the elections. About 70,000 people will be involved in the work of the commissions," the head of the CEC added.
"Political parties and public associations, as subjects of the electoral system, are directly involved in the elections, nominating their representatives to election commissions, sending observers, working as part of initiative groups to collect signatures of citizens for the nomination of candidates for deputies, conducting election campaigning, mass events and meetings with voters," Igor Karpenko emphasized. “The updated Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus came into force on 4 March of this year. The amendments underwent a wide public discussion, comply with international standards, are aimed at developing the electoral system of the Republic of Belarus, and will reduce the electoral cycle and the costs of election campaigns."
