Belarus to present national report on nuclear safety at IAEA

MINSK, 20 March (BelTA) - The Belarusian delegation is set to take part in the Joint Eighth and Ninth Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety, which will be held at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna from 20 to 31 March, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Energy Ministry.

The delegation will include representatives of the Department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Emergencies Ministry, Energy Ministry, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Healthcare Ministry, and the Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research - Sosny of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

The meeting will review Belarus' national report on the implementation of the Convention on Nuclear Safety for the six-year period from 2017 to 2022, including the key results of the work done on the BelNPP project, the development of nuclear and radiation safety infrastructure and its components, the improvement of the legislative and regulatory framework, the development of state systems of emergency preparedness and response. In addition, the country will present the results of the international missions to the BelNPP, including the IAEA missions, as well as the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) peer reviews.

While preparing for the meeting Belarus studied the national reports of other countries on the implementation of the convention, formed questions to them, and also gave answers to the questions on the Belarusian national report (a total of 160 questions were received).

The Convention on Nuclear Safety was adopted on 17 June 1994. It aims at achieving and maintaining a high level of nuclear safety throughout the world by strengthening national measures and international cooperation. Belarus ratified the convention in 1998.
