MINSK, 25 July (BelTA) - In May 2023, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko sent an official application to the heads of the BRICS member states on the country's admission to BRICS, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the media.

"This decision was an absolutely logical step in the context of Belarus’ approaches to expanding cooperation in multilateral formats with traditional partners and friendly states. To date, 25 countries have already applied to join BRICS. This list is constantly growing. This is not surprising," the press service said.

Currently, the BRICS countries account for more than 40% of the world's population. The states of the association already generate over 30% of the world’s GDP. "Based on the objective realities, we believe that the importance and influence of BRICS will be steadily growing. in the world Therefore, Belarus is not alone in its aspiration for membership in the association," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Currently, BRICS is actively discussing the criteria for membership or the definition of another format of interaction within its framework, for example, ‘friends of BRICS’ or ‘BRICS partner countries’.

The foreign ministers are expected to present their recommendations to the BRICS heads of state for consideration during the high-level summit in August 2023.

"We look forward to the further progressive development of our cooperation with BRICS in various possible formats," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
