MINSK, 20 July (BelTA) - At a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna on 20 July, Belarus spoke about the negative impact of Western sanctions against Belarusian potash fertilizers on world food security and demanded the lifting of restrictive measures, the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the OSCE in Vienna told BelTA.

"Today, a number of delegations condemned Russia for withdrawal from the Black Sea grain deal. Russia was accused of using food as a weapon and a measure of pressure, undermining the world food market, the Permanent Mission noted. "But the claims that Russia's decision will jeopardize food security and access to grain and fertilizer supplies around the world are disingenuous, to say the least."

"On the one hand, the ‘Western conglomerate’ stands up for the interests and needs of all people around the world, including the poorest countries that will ultimately have to pay higher food prices. On the other hand, they use unilateral coercive measures, citing conflicts or human right violations as a reason," the Permanent Mission continued.

In this regard, Belarusian diplomats referred to the sanctions against Belarusian potash fertilizers.

"Belarus has repeatedly drawn attention at various levels and forums to the fact that the illegitimate sanctions imposed by the West against the Belarusian potash industry have extremely negative consequences for global food security. The UN and other international organizations are all unanimous about the detrimental impact of the unilateral restrictive measures and sanctions on international food security. Sanctions against Belarusian potash fertilizers, including Lithuania's illegal ban on the transit of Belarusian potash, are causing the threat of world hunger, a threat to global food security," the Permanent Mission noted.

Belarusian diplomats explained: "The shortage of potash fertilizers as a result of restrictive measures against Belarusian potash has led to a shortage of them on world markets and an increase in prices. Accordingly, their use has decreased, yields have shrunk, and food prices have gone up. A particularly dangerous situation that could escalate into large-scale famine is developing in the least developed countries of the world."

Belarus once again called to lift the restrictions on international trade and transit of Belarusian potash fertilizers. "We demand and, in general, abandon the use of unilateral coercive measures, stop political manipulation and abuse of the transit position," the Permanent Mission said.
