Lukashenko: Trade wars in the Eurasian Economic Union cannot be allowed

MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) – Trade wars cannot be allowed in conditions of the Eurasian Economic Union. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement during an open dialogue with mass media on 29 January, BelTA has learned.

“Some things should not have happened after these documents [on establishing the Eurasian Economic Union] were signed. These wars — dubbed by mass media as milk, meat, candy wars… They should not have happened. I had to deal with these issues at the top level a short while ago,” said the Belarus President.

“Economy will remain the foundation of our future actions, maybe in the political and military political sense, too,” said the head of state. He remarked that the Eurasian Economic Union is often compared with the European Union, which has evolved over a long period of time, and therefore one should not expect the Eurasian integration project to develop fast. “I always respond by saying that the European Union did not have the experience of work in the integrated Soviet Union the way we had. We enjoyed tighter relations back then. And the fact should be utilized. Nevertheless, it is true that we have been establishing the Eurasian Economic Union for virtually several years. A lot of legislative work is involved. You cannot expect us to resolve many economic issues at the same time,” noted Alexander Lukashenko.
