Belarus, Lithuania to do research in cattle breeding

MINSK, 27 January (BelTA) – Belarus and Lithuania are ready to conduct joint research in the cattle breeding sector. It is one of the agreements reached at the first meeting of the Belarusian-Lithuanian working group on cooperation in agriculture that took place in Minsk on 26 January, BelTA learnt from the Agriculture and Food Ministry.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister of Belarus Vasily Sedin and Lithuanian Vice Minister of Agriculture Vilius Martusevicius.

Representatives of the Belarusian ministry got familiar with the cattle breeding system in Lithuania and expressed interest in continuing mutually beneficial cooperation. “The parties will carry out research in the cattle breeding sector through active cooperation between the State Livestock Supervision Service of the Ministry of Agriculture of Lithuania and the state association Belplemzhivobyedineniye in genetics and selection, IT and new opportunities in manufacturing, scientific and industrial research,” the Agriculture and Food Ministry of Belarus said.

The parties agreed on strengthening cooperation in animal medicine for the prevention of the spread of infection diseases among animals (with a special focus on the African swine fever) and mutual favorable epizootic situation on the territories of the two countries.

“The working group stressed its interest in developing cooperation in the phytosanitary control between the main state inspectorate on seed farming, quarantine policy and plant protection of Belarus and the state plant breeding service at the Ministry of Agriculture of Lithuania. The parties hailed the practice of bilateral meetings between heads and specialists of the phytosanitary inspections for a prompt response to emerging issues in the bilateral trade in the cargoes of vegetable origin and the organization of regular meetings on import/export issues, consultations and training on the legislation of the Customs Union as well as the European Union in the sphere of phytosanitary control,” the Ministry of Agriculture of Belarus noted.

The parties discussed the implementation of joint agricultural investment projects in Belarus. As was noted, Belarus is ready to offer cooperation in attracting investment resources for the implementation of concrete agricultural projects and modernization of processing companies.

The parties took note of the mutual interest in developing bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas. “We are also interested in organizing on-site training for students in Lithuanian agricultural companies in summer as well as on-the-job training for postgraduates and the academic staff. In turn our agrarian universities are ready to organize training and on-the-job training for Lithuanian students and academic staff,” the Agriculture and Food Ministry of Belarus said.

The second meeting of the Belarusian-Lithuanian working group in cooperation in agriculture will take place in Lithuania.
